Ariovistus
King of a confederation of Germanic peoples (chiefly Suebi) who crossed the Rhine at the invitation of the Arverni and Sequani and made himself master of much of central Gaul; styled “king and friend” by the Roman Senate in Caesar's consulship, then defeated by Caesar in 58 BC.
